Considering that many priests reach their retirement, whether due to age or serious illness, initiatives are being promoted to support, care for, and welcome them.
One of these is opening retirement homes where the appropriate care for their condition is provided. For example, the Retirement Home for Legionaries of Christ Priests is located in Cancún, Mexico, where it welcomes 15 retired priests, committed to providing them with a stay in the fullness of life, attended with dignity and professionalism.
There is a chapel, a lounge, and a dining room, offering a space that honors the life and apostolic work of those who, in their active time, promoted significant works and apostolates. Some of these priests still enjoy good physical and mental health, dedicating their apostolate to offering Masses and prayers for those who request it.
They receive first-class medical assistance 24 hours a day, timely care and support, personal hygiene, therapies, proper nutrition, laboratory sample collection, clinical services, psychological support, and gerontology care with activities to stimulate cognition, autonomy, and mobility, spiritual life, social relationships, and nursing support.
“Pray for them, who have dedicated their lives to the Church and to souls”
The mission of the Home is to accompany and serve priests of the Legion who face illnesses or are in the retirement stage in a professional, humane, and spiritual manner. Their objectives include providing specialized and professional care to elderly priests, caring for and accompanying those who have reached old age with fraternity, dignifying this period with care and prayer, and valuing the love and wisdom of elderly and sick priests.
This initiative is also a gesture of gratitude towards those who dedicated their lives to the Church, to souls, and to training laity and priests. It is a grateful service to those who, out of love, gave their lives.
“Old age is not a disease, but a privilege. Fragility elevating us to God, purifies and sanctifies us.” Pope Francis
