Meeting of Legionaries with Cardinal Fernando Vérgez, L.C.

Published on 13 February, 2025
Legionaries, News, Rome

These brothers have a reflection group on the charisma of the Legion and the Regnum Christi: they meet every month and look for texts and people to help them deepen their understanding of the gift received and how to better serve the Church. It was in this context that the meeting took place.

On January 9th, Cardinal Fernando Vérgez, LC, received at the Vatican City Governatorate a group of brothers from the International College’s philosophy program.

During the meeting, Cardinal Vérgez shared with the brothers some moments of his life and his relationship with the Legion of Christ. The meeting lasted about two hours, during which there was time for questions. “He emphasized the importance of being available to live loving the Church in the concrete situations that arise in our mission. He greatly appreciated the presence of the Congregation in his life because it formed him in the fundamentals that sustain him to this day, and he shared with us the positive vision that the Curia has of us,” comments Brother Rodrigo Herrera, LC, one of the participants in the meeting.

Cardinal Fernando Vérgez was born in Salamanca (Spain), on March 1, 1945. He made his perpetual profession in the Congregation of the Legionaries of Christ on December 25, 1965, and was ordained a priest on November 26, 1969. He earned a degree in Philosophy and Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and obtained a diploma from the School of Archivists of the Vatican Secret Archives. On August 1, 1972, he began his service in the Holy See at the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life; in April 1984, he was transferred to the Pontifical Council for the Laity; in June 2004, he was appointed Head of the Vatican Internet Office; and finally, on January 10, 2008, he was appointed Director of the Vatican State Telecommunications Directorate. On August 30, 2013, Mons. Fernando Vérgez was appointed Secretary General of the Vatican City Governatorate, and on October 15 of the same year, he was elevated to the episcopal dignity, being assigned the titular bishopric of Villamagna di Proconsolare. On September 29, 2020, he was appointed a member of the Reserved Matters Commission. On September 8, 2021, the Holy Father appointed him President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and President of the Vatican City State Governatorate, simultaneously granting him the personal title of Archbishop.
