Prayers to Give Thanks After Communion

Published on 3 August, 2015
Prayers
Prayers to thank the Lord for the gift of communion.

During the silence that follows communion, if it helps to thank the Lord for the gift received, you may recite one of the following prayers:

Prayer to Jesus Crucified

Look at me, oh my beloved and good Jesus, prostrate at the foot of your divine presence. I beg and implore you with great fervor of my soul, to deign to engrave in my heart very lively feelings of faith, hope, and charity, sincere repentance for my sins, and a firm purpose never to offend you again. While I, with all the love and pain I am capable of, consider and meditate on your five wounds, taking into account what the holy prophet David said of you, oh my God: “They have pierced my hands and my feet, and all my bones can be counted.”

Soul of Christ

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, intoxicate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, conform me.
Oh good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds, hide me.
Do not let me be separated from you.
From the evil enemy, defend me.
At the hour of my death, call me.
And send me to you, so that with your saints I may praise and bless you forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to the Father

Thank you, Lord, Almighty Father, for all your benefits and especially because you have willed to admit me to participate in the most sacred Body of your divine Son.

I beg you, oh most merciful Father, that this holy communion may not be a bond or occasion of punishment for me, but a healthy intercession for forgiveness; be the armor of my faith, shield of my good will, death of all my vices, extermination of all my fleshly appetites, and increase of charity, patience, true humility, and all virtues; be the perfect peace of my body and spirit, a firm defense against all my visible and invisible enemies, perpetual union with you alone, my true God and Lord, and a happy seal of my blessed death.

And I ask you to kindly bring me, a sinner, to that inexpressible feast where you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, are for your saints true light, fulfilled satisfaction, lasting joy, complete happiness, and perfect bliss. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Pope Clement XI

I believe in you, Lord, but help me to believe with firmness; I hope in you, but help me to hope without distrust; I love you, Lord, but help me to show you that I love you; I am sorry, but help me not to offend you again.

I adore you, Lord, because you are my creator and I long for you because you are my end; I praise you, because you never tire of doing me good, and I take refuge in you, because you are my protector.

May your wisdom, Lord, guide me, and your justice rebuke me; may your mercy comfort me, and your power defend me.

I offer you, Lord, my thoughts, help me to think of you; I offer you my words, help me to speak of you; I offer you my works, help me to fulfill your will; I offer you my pains, help me to suffer for you.

All that you want, Lord, I want too, precisely because you want it, as you want it and for as long as you want it.

I ask you, Lord, to enlighten my understanding, strengthen my will, purify my heart, and sanctify my spirit.

Make me weep, Lord, for my sins, reject temptations, overcome my inclinations to evil, and cultivate virtues.

Give me your grace, Lord, to love you and forget myself, to seek the good of my neighbor without fear of the world.

Give me your grace to be obedient to my superiors, understanding with my inferiors, solicitous with my friends, and generous with my enemies.

Help me, Lord, to overcome pleasure with austerity, greed with generosity, anger with kindness, and lukewarmness with fervor.

May I know how to have prudence, Lord, in advising, courage in dangers, patience in difficulties, simplicity in successes.

Grant me, Lord, attention in prayer, sobriety in eating, responsibility in my work, and firmness in my purposes.

Help me to preserve the purity of my soul, to be modest in my attitudes, exemplary in my dealings with others, and truly Christian in my conduct.

Grant me your help to master my instincts, to foster your life of grace within me, to fulfill your commandments, and to attain my salvation.

Teach me, Lord, to understand the smallness of earthly things, the greatness of the divine, the brevity of this life, and the eternity to come.

Grant me, Lord, good preparation for death and holy fear of judgment, to free myself from hell and attain your glory.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Offering

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and all my will, my entire being and possession. You gave it to me; to you, Lord, I return it. All is yours. Dispose of me according to your will. Give me your love and grace, for that is enough for me.

Prayer to Christ the King

Oh Christ Jesus, I acknowledge you as King of the universe. Everything that exists was created by you. Exercise all your rights over me. I renew my baptismal promises, renouncing Satan, his seductions, and his works, and I promise to live as a good Christian. In particular, I commit myself to make, according to my means, the rights of God and your Church triumph.

Jesus Christ, I offer you my poor actions so that all hearts may recognize and live your message of peace, justice, and love.
