He was part of the first generations of Legionaries and was one of the first to denounce the abuses of P. Maciel
Father Félix Alarcón passed away on February 5, 2021, the first Friday of the month, at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz hospital in Madrid (Spain), at the age of 87 and after 57 years of priesthood, due to bilateral pneumonia caused by coronavirus. Father Félix was part of the first generations of Legionaries of Christ and was one of the first to denounce and be a victim of P. Marcial Maciel, whom the Legionaries of Christ apologized to at the 2020 General Chapter, recognizing “his prophetic denunciation in favor of truth and justice” and thanking “the good he did not only to the Congregation but to the Church itself” (Conversion and Reparation).
Father Félix Alarcón was born on February 3, 1934, in Madrid, Spain. In September 1950, he entered the Vocational Center of Cóbreces, Spain. He was ordained a priest on December 24, 1963, by Cardinal Hildebrando Antoniutti, then prefect of the Congregation for Religious, at the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Rome, Italy. In 1967, he received a dispensation to leave the Legion, and in 1973, he was incardinated into the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, United States. For 38 years, he exercised his pastoral ministry in various parishes and served as a hospital chaplain in the United States. Once retired, he returned to Madrid, Spain, where his sister lives.
In 1997, he was one of eight people who publicly denounced P. Marcial Maciel due to the sexual abuses they suffered as seminarians and priests. At the 2014 General Chapter, he sent a video to the capitular fathers inviting them to seek the truth and confront the issue of abuse. In recent years, some Legionaries, former Legionaries, and members of Regnum Christi were close to Father Félix, and he always received them with deep kindness and friendliness.
On January 17, 2021, he slipped on ice on the street and fell, was admitted to the hospital, where a hip prosthesis was implanted. Upon leaving the hospital, he accepted the invitation to live in a Legionary community while recovering. Upon arriving at the community, although he showed no symptoms, a COVID test was performed, which came back positive. After a few days, he began to have low oxygen saturation and was hospitalized, where he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. Over the following days, his health deteriorated, and he passed away on February 5, 2021. He leaves his sister, Maruja, who is 100 years old, and four nieces.
Rest in peace, Father Félix!
