The framework for collaboration in the mission of the different branches of the Regnum Christi

Published on 26 March, 2014
News

The governments of the different branches of the Regnum Christi Movement approved four documents on March 19, 2014, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of Mary, related to the path toward an appropriate canonical configuration of the Regnum Christi as a whole. These documents are:

1. A letter to all members of the Regnum Christi
2. A decree establishing the General Steering Committee of the Regnum Christi Movement
3. A decree establishing the Central Commission for the review of the General Statute of the Regnum Christi Movement
4. Provisional framework for collaboration in the mission of the Regnum Christi at the general and territorial levels

1. LETTER TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE REGNUM CHRISTI

The letter can be read here.

The letter explains who participated in the meetings from March 17 to 19 in Rome, and the purpose of these meetings:

  1. «To outline the way in which we will continue the reflection process on the Regnum Christi as a whole to move toward an appropriate canonical configuration. This necessarily involves a deepening of the identity of the first and second degrees.
  2. To agree on the provisional way in which we will facilitate common direction for the apostolate, promoting proper participation and shared responsibility of all branches».

Subsequently, the letter addresses three topics:

First, it presents the path of reflection that has been taken to contextualize the decisions made and to explain the motives behind them. It also proposes the stages foreseen for joint reflection: 1. Deepening in fundamental themes; 2. Reflecting specifically on the nature of the first and second degrees of the Regnum Christi and, in particular, on the third nuance of the second degree; 3. Reflecting on the charismatic elements common to the different vocations that make up the Regnum Christi. It is thought that the third step will conclude with the drafting of some Statutes.

Second, the letter invites members of the Regnum Christi to a renewed enthusiasm in their evangelizing mission based on the Church’s confirmation that we have received from God an authentic charism for the good of the Church and humanity.

The third topic is the explanation of the Framework for Collaboration, which is presented below.

2. DECREE ESTABLISHING THE GENERAL STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE REGNUM CHRISTI MOVEMENT

The decree can be read here.

Through this decree, the General Steering Committee of the Regnum Christi Movement is formally established, as defined and described in the fourth part of the Provisional Framework for Collaboration. It is composed of the following persons:

  • P. Eduardo Robles-Gil Orvañanos, L.C., General Director of the Legion of Christ, president of the Committee.
  • Gloria Rodríguez Díaz, General Director of the Consecrated Women of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Jorge López González, General Responsible of the Laity of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Cristina Danel Cendoya, General Counselor of the Consecrated Women of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Viviana Limón Olavarrieta, General Counselor of the Consecrated Women of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • P. Sylvester Heereman, L.C., General Counselor of the Legion of Christ, member.
  • P. Juan Sabadell Riera, L.C., General Counselor of the Legion of Christ, member.
  • Francisco Gámez Arcaya, representative of the lay members of the first and second degrees, member.

Fr. Jaime Rodríguez Díaz, Secretary General of the Legion of Christ, will serve as Secretary of the Committee during its first 18 months of operation.

3. DECREE ESTABLISHING THE CENTRAL COMMISSION FOR THE REVIEW OF THE GENERAL STATUTE OF THE REGNUM CHRISTI MOVEMENT

The decree can be read here.

The decree formally establishes the commission that will review the General Statute of the Regnum Christi Movement. It includes the following persons:

  • P. Eduardo Robles-Gil Orvañanos, L.C., General Director of the Legion of Christ, president.
  • Gloria Rodríguez Díaz, General Director of the Consecrated Women of the Regnum Christi, counselor.
  • Jorge López González, General Responsible of the Laity of the Regnum Christi, counselor.
  • Iliano Piccolo, representative of the members of the first and second degrees, counselor.
  • P. Sylvester Heereman, L.C., General Counselor of the Legion of Christ, member and executive responsible.
  • Viviana Limón Olavarrieta, General Counselor of the Consecrated Women of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Emilio Martínez Albesa, consecrated lay member of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Stefano De Pasquale Ceratti, lay member of the Regnum Christi, member.
  • Javier Bendek Viera, lay member of the Regnum Christi, secretary.
  • H. Pablo Solís Aguirre, L.C., Legionary of Christ, secretary.

Consultants have also been appointed: Fathers Gianfranco Ghirlanda, S.J., and Roberto Aspe, L.C.

4. PROVISIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR COLLABORATION IN THE MISSION OF THE REGNUM CHRISTI AT THE GENERAL AND TERRITORIAL LEVEL

The Framework for collaboration can be read here.

The Framework for collaboration is a provisional document whose “purpose is to define the management mechanisms and appropriate consultative bodies within the scope of the evangelizing mission of Regnum Christi that involves all branches of the Movement jointly, at the general and territorial levels, through the participation and shared responsibility of the various states of life and vocations that compose it.”

The Framework for collaboration is a text that will remain in effect “while the competent ecclesiastical authority does not approve a legal configuration for Regnum Christi. […] This document will allow us to learn from experience, mature best practices, and develop over time a satisfactory proposal that can be approved by the Holy See.”

The document is divided into five parts:

  1. The first, titled Charismatic Foundation, offers a brief theological and spiritual explanation of participation in a charism, a spirituality, and a mission by members of different vocations. “The complementarity of the various vocations gives the Movement special evangelizing strength.”
  2. The second part outlines the milestones of the journey toward an appropriate canonical configuration for the Regnum Christi as a whole. The Legion of Christ Constitutions, the Statutes of the Lay Consecrated Members of Regnum Christi, and the Statutes of the Consecrated Women of Regnum Christi clearly express their belonging to Regnum Christi. However, at the end of the General Chapter and General Assemblies, it was not legally possible to sign an agreement because the associations of the consecrated members and women had not yet been canonically erected. Moreover, the Statutes of Regnum Christi, approved by the Holy See in 2004, do not foresee the participation and representation organs necessary to validly sign an agreement. This situation required intermediate provisional steps.
  3. The third part defines the purpose of the Framework for Collaboration.
  4. The fourth part defines four collaboration organs and establishes the basic rules for their constitution and operation:
    a. The General Steering Committee, whose mission is the ordinary direction of the common apostolic mission at the general level.
    b. The Plenary General Meeting of the general governments of the different branches, convened at least once a year to analyze strategic issues of the evangelizing mission of Regnum Christi.
    c. The Territorial Steering Committee, which directs the apostolic mission of Regnum Christi in a territory.
    d. The Territorial Plenary Meeting of the territorial governments of the different branches, convened at least twice a year to analyze strategic issues of the evangelizing mission of Regnum Christi.
  5. The fifth part establishes some decisions that more directly affect the life of the consecrated branches and how participation in decision-making will be carried out.
