On April 2, 2005, Vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope John Paul II passed away. Thousands of people were gathered in the square that day, praying for the Pope.
Subsequently, more than 3 million pilgrims gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica to bid farewell to the Polish Pope during the days of the funeral rites. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him on May 1, 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him on April 27, 2014.
Saint John Paul II made 104 apostolic journeys outside Italy during his pontificate, earning him the nickname “The Pilgrim Pope”. He promoted World Youth Days and World Meetings of Families. He also authored a wide range of documents including Encyclicals, Apostolic Letters, and Exhortations, which, together with catecheses, homilies, and speeches, now form part of the rich doctrinal heritage of the Church.
¡Saint John Paul II, pray for us!
