It is common to hear the Holy Spirit called the Great Unknown, but I think that for us, Legionaries of Christ, it should be quite the opposite: it should be the Great Known.
The number 13 of our Constitutions reminds us that “the Holy Spirit, comforter and sweet guest of the soul, is the architect of our transformation in Christ and sustains us in the mission to establish His Kingdom,” invites us to cultivate “an intimate relationship with Him” and to ask for His gifts, as well as to be “docile to His inspirations to walk faithfully along the path of God’s will.”
This solemnity of Pentecost is a good occasion to renew our relationship with the Holy Spirit. Let us allow Him to come into our hearts and fill them with His fire; let us allow His breath of life to blow over us and revive our dry bones (cf. Ez 37); let us permit Him to illuminate our darkness with His light; let us drink from His living water and let Him rest our tired bodies along the way.
In our mission to establish the Kingdom of Christ in society, the Holy Spirit must be our best friend, our best companion, and ally in the battle. Only He softens hardened hearts, only He heals the sick in body and soul, only He baptizes, only He guides souls toward eternal life; we are merely His instruments.
If we cultivate an intimate relationship with Him and have faith, even as small as a mustard seed, we will move mountains, because He promised so (cf. Mt 17:20).
If we are docile to His inspirations, He will make us walk on stormy waters and will make us brave messengers of the Gospel.
If we let the Holy Spirit be the architect of our transformation in Christ, we will be authentic Legionaries, conforming to the Heart of Jesus Christ, and we will faithfully fulfill the mission to which the Lord calls us, trusting that it is He who accomplishes all our endeavors (cf. Is 26:12).
If we cultivate our friendship with the Holy Spirit, for us He will no longer be the Great Unknown, but we can confidently call Him the Great Known.
