The most important decision – Every change begins with a decision

La decisión más importante – Todo cambio empieza con una decisión

“I am not sure if at this moment in your life you want to know something about God, whether you are a believer or not, but I can be certain that you want to have a happy life, a full life, a well-lived life. The more years pass, the more I realize that it is very difficult to have that happy, full, well-lived life if we leave God aside. I do not say this from the perspective of a religious person, but from that of a man who has experienced a before and after in his life” (H. Adrián Olvera, LC, “The most important decision”).

The most important decision – Every change begins with a decisionWho is Adrián Olvera, LC?

I am a beloved and redeemed child of God. I was born in the port of Veracruz (Mexico). I am blessed to have my mom and dad, an older sister who already has two daughters, and I am 31 years old. Thanks to God, today we are a family very close to God, but it was not always like that. Before, we were more a family of habit: weddings, graduations…, but with a very cold faith, turning to God only when we felt bad or had some problem. Catholics in name, but not in life.

I joined the Legion of Christ in 2013, after being a collaborator of the Regnum Christi for a year in Cancún. I did my novitiate and humanities studies in the city of Monterrey, then moved to Rome to study philosophy at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum. My apostolic practices were carried out in Guadalajara (Mexico) and now I am studying my first year of theology, in Rome.

The book: “The most important decision”

A personal experience motivated me to write this book. I had no doubt that I should share this experience. I lived it, I experienced it, and I saw that many young people and many others were going through the same situation. I realized that, even as a religious, I was getting tired of the way I lived my Catholic faith, my relationship with God. It made me feel as if I had a straitjacket, as if “no longer being free”. And deep inside, something was telling me : “ this cannot be”, “this I am living cannot be”, “Catholicism is not a relationship with God”, “I don’t feel free, I don’t feel full”. I realized and became more aware that I had many images of God in my mind that were not God. There were many images in my culture that were not God. I had the grace to take this path, to remove false ideas of God in order to reach a true God, who is Father, who is love. And this changed my life. Seeing that many people live this feeling of Catholicism, I was convinced I had to share my experience, and that is why I wrote the book.

Many of us, without realizing it, have been living a relationship with “the idea of God”, with the God that someone has presented to us but that is far from the true God, from the Person of Christ. In the book, I propose three ideas of God with which we usually relate, and which make us experience Christianity as a straitjacket. It is not a manual or a series of steps to follow; it is an invitation to undertake a path toward the knowledge of the true God. But the key is that it is done by conviction, it is a path taken by personal decision.
