On November 22nd, two decades have passed since the episcopal ordination of Mons. Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, Bishop of Cancún-Chetumal.

It was on October 26th, 2004, when the election of the then Fr. Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, as the prelate bishop for Cancún-Chetumal was made public by Saint John Paul II. A few weeks later, he was episcopally consecrated.

During Mons. Pedro Pablo’s episcopate, the Prelature was elevated to a Diocese on February 15, 2020, becoming the first diocesan bishop of Cancún-Chetumal. On May 31, 2024, the consecration of the “Sanctuary-Parish of Mary, the Undoer of Knots,” in Cancún took place, one of the most important Marian pilgrimage destinations in Mexico. On September 4, 2024, Monsignor Pedro Pablo Elizondo, LC, turned 75 years old, reaching the canonical age at which the Code of Canon Law provides for bishops to submit their resignation (cf. CIC, c. 401 § 1).

At the Plenary Assembly of the first semester of the 2024-2025 cycle, Mons. Pedro Pablo was elected member of the Permanent Council of the Episcopal Conference for the 2024-2027 cycle. The pastoral vicar of the Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal prepared a commemorative video for the 20th anniversary of Mons. Pedro Pablo:

At a press conference on November 26th, Mons. Pedro Pablo, accompanied by the governor of the State of Quintana Roo (Mara Lezama), presented the plan to resume the completion of the Cancún cathedral, anticipating its completion by December 2025 (a more detailed note on this topic can be read on ZENIT).
