Information Note 4 from the 2020 General Chapter
February 5-8
February 8, 2020
In recent days, the capitular fathers have dedicated time to community and personal prayer and discernment to choose the priests who will form the new general government of the Legionaries of Christ for the period 2020-2026. The votes to elect the superior general, the six general counselors, and the general administrator of the Congregation took place between February 6 and 8.
Father John Connor was elected superior general of the Congregation on February 6. The following day, Father John presided over the Eucharistic celebration with the other capitular fathers. In his homily, he spoke about the importance of setting a good example and being spiritual fathers to our brothers, especially in difficult times. Drawing from the reading and the Gospel of the day, he proposed the example of David and John the Baptist and reminded us that if we let the Holy Spirit use “everything He has given us, He multiplies it. Not only for ourselves but also for our brothers. We need each other,” and he added: “I need your good example; it helps me persevere. It is something very simple in life, but very important.”
Subsequently, between February 7 and 8, Father Hernán Jiménez was elected first counselor and vicar general, and Fathers Jesús Villagrasa, Rafael Ducci, Pedro Barrajón, Gerardo Flores, and Michael Brisson were elected general counselors. Father José Cárdenas was re-elected as general administrator.
The new general government of the Legionaries of Christ is composed of priests from four nationalities (United States, Mexico, Chile, and Spain). You can learn more about each of them and the positions they will hold through this link.
